Updated: Jan 30

Hub: Pokhara, Nepal | Difficulty: Moderate | Season: Feb - May & Sep - Nov | Duration: From 5 days | Budget: ₹30,000+

The Himalayas have captivated adventurers from across the globe for over two centuries, and it's easy to see why! This legendary mountain range is home to some of the tallest peaks on Earth, including the magnificent Annapurna. Though it's the world's 10th tallest mountain, its summit soars to an incredible 8,000 meters. This awe-inspiring giant is also the highlight of the famed Annapurna Circuit trek, a challenging and rewarding journey favored by seasoned trekkers.

If you're not quite ready to conquer the Annapurna Circuit, fear not! The Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers a similarly thrilling experience with breathtaking mountain vistas. Both routes take you from lush subtropical zones to stunning alpine landscapes, ensuring unforgettable views of the majestic summit.

Annapurna is nestled in Nepal, northwest of the vibrant capital, Kathmandu. The gateway to this Himalayan wonderland is the charming city of Pokhara. Travelers can fly into either city, but most often, they arrive in Kathmandu first via the international airport and then continue their journey to Pokhara.

This picturesque lakeside city is brimming with cultural and historical gems; it once served as a bustling trade route between China and India. Today, it's the launchpad for thrilling Himalayan adventures departing from Nepal. After exploring and soaking in the delights of Pokhara, the Annapurna Base Camp trek begins!

If you opt for a guided tour with a company, your accommodation and meals will be seamlessly arranged. However, this trek is one of the rare few in the Himalayas where a guide isn't a necessity. Most treks are longer and involve steeper altitude gains, making guidance essential. But if you choose to embark on this adventure solo or with loved ones, you'll find clear signage guiding your way. Plus, you'll encounter fellow trekkers on this iconic route, as it's one of the most celebrated walks worldwide.

Each day, you'll trek for about six hours, with plenty of opportunities to pause and enjoy meals in the quaint villages you pass. One such village early in your journey is Ghandruk, home to the Gurung people and a fascinating museum that many trekkers visit. Each village offers cozy teahouses for lodging—no need to lug heavy camping gear! Rest in comfort and savor homemade meals, supporting the local families who run these delightful establishments.

Beyond Ghandruk, prepare to be awestruck by your first real views of Annapurna's south face as you wander through lush forests of bamboo and rhododendrons. Other majestic peaks, like Machapuchare and Gangapurna, will also come into view. You can even relax in natural hot springs before tackling the 2,500 stone steps leading to the village of Chomrong.

Your journey into higher altitudes truly kicks off after Chomrong. If you're trekking without a guide, it's wise to take it slow and allow time to acclimatize. As you approach Annapurna Base Camp, you'll follow a glacial river with its mesmerizing icy blue waters. Forests give way to expansive meadows, and distant waterfalls cascade down the rugged cliffs.

Reaching Annapurna Base Camp rewards you with unobstructed views of the summit! Nestled at the foot of the mountain within the Annapurna Sanctuary, this protected haven at 4,100 meters offers the perfect vantage point to marvel at Annapurna's dramatic south face. Surrounding this peak are slightly shorter yet equally stunning mountains, including Machapuchare, Annapurna I, and Hiunchuli.

After soaking in the breathtaking scenery at ABC, it's time to head back. The return journey follows the same path but is much easier, as it's nearly all downhill. Take another dip in the hot springs to soothe your tired muscles. Descend the 2,500 stone steps. Some adventurers trek all the way back to their starting point near Pokhara, while others catch a Jeep for a swift return to the city. No matter how you choose to conclude your adventure, you'll carry cherished memories of your Himalayan trek for a lifetime!
